Zakynthos is also known as a summer resort. It is a wonderful Greek island in the Ionian Sea. Zakynthos is one of the most popular beaches in the world. There is so much to do in Zakynthos. This island is certainly one of the best places to
visit Greece . If you hear the name of Greece ,
you will probably get pictures of the white sand beaches of Crete ,
the stone pillars of the Acropolis of Athens or the whitewashed buildings of
Santorini. However, there are more than 6,000 islands in this Mediterranean
archipelago and Zakynthos is a gem among them.
Many travelers from Europe have already enjoyed this Ionian beauty, located to the west of the Greek mainland. However, for
Americans and travelers in other parts of the world, this may be the first time
they have heard about it. With an irregular coastline, picturesque villages,
mountainous interior and some of the best beaches in Greece
(ie Navagio Beach ), Zakynthos quickly became one of
our favorite islands in the country. Small enough to navigate easily by car, but large enough to
offer a variety of landscapes, cities, and coastlines, this Ionian island should
stand out on its next Greek itinerary.
In this post, I will share the best things to do in
Zakynthos to give you an idea of what is being proposed here. You will find that many activities in Zakynthos are related
to the beach because the island is better known for this reason. You will not
find the history of Crete, the magnificent architecture that is famous in
Santorini, nor the culture and cities of islands such as Lesbos, Chios, and Corfu , but "Zante" is the perfect place for a
relaxing holiday for those who know him. ,
Visit Navagio Beach (Shipwreck
Bay )
The main attraction of the island and
perhaps the most photographed place in the country. This impressive section of
white sand and incredibly blue waters are protected by a natural harbor with
towering cliffs 200 meters high on three sides. In the middle of the sand, there is a ship in ruins. A rumor
(false) said it was a smuggler ship that crashed on a beach during a storm,
even though it was just a cargo ship that had landed. Believe it or not, the romantic story does not matter, the huge ship that rests on the sand definitely
adds charm and charm to this spectacular view.
Generally, there are only two ways to see the beach of Navagio ,
either by the sea or from the top of the cliffs. There are no roads that lead
directly to the sand. Then, to swim in the water and see the wreck closely, you
have to go on a boat trip. These can be rented in different villages on the island. If
you are traveling by car, it is best to go to the nearest bay on Navagio beach
and board a boat from there. In Porto Vromi (south of Navagio) you can take a boat trip
to Shipwreck Cove for about $ 25 per person.
Visit the Venetian
Castle
If you are a few hours from the beach, you can visit the
ancient ruins of the Venetian castle. The Ionian Islands were occupied by
Turks, French, British, Venetians, and Russians, but the Venetians left behind
some of the most imposing fortress sites of Zakynthos, Cephalonia, and Corfu .
The castle here is not as impressive as Assos Castle
in Kefalonia, but it's worth a visit if you're already near the town of Zakynthos . The exact date
of the construction is not yet known, but it was destroyed in 1480 by the
Turkish invaders and then restored in 1515. Today, it bears witness to the
ancient glory of Zakynthos as a Venetian military fortress, and the visitors
can walk around an old fortress, powder rooms, courtyards, churches, and an old
sewer system.
Dinner at and drinks at the restaurant
It is really this small Greek-managed restaurant that offers the best view of the rough interior of Zakynthos. Pick a table on the deck and look at the cliff towards farmland and the Ionian Sea in the distance.
The all food here is fantastic, the service is excellent and it is the perfect place for a sunset. We recommend roast lamb (9 €) and beef stew (8 €). Both are absolutely delicious. Beers cost around € 2.5 and snacks only € 4 each. Generally, you should pay more for food in a place like this, because the view is very good, but this is not the case in Lofos. You will probably also get a free dessert, so you may not want to order one!
Visit Alykes
Beach
It was our favorite beach on the island, partly because it
was one of the best stretches of golden sand we found, but also because we
found our favorite beach bar on the island, Porto Paradiso. This place had delicious food (with Greek dishes), great
service, and cheap beer and cocktails. We were allowed to sit on the free
sunbeds if we asked for it at the restaurant or bar.
The view of the clear blue waters of the Ionian
Sea is a dream and the water is deep enough to swim a few meters
from the shore. It's really hard to go to a beach like this!
Enjoy the boat trip to Zakynthos
Travelers can have a private boat trip to the island
with events on the luxury island and it was very fun, but we recommend renting
a private boat for only 80 € / day plus the gas (usually 40 €) and along the
Let go island Let yourself go! Due to high winds and high waves, you may not be able to
navigate to Shipwreck Cove, but you can move to several bays, get wet and swim
without anyone being close. This is definitely one of the best things to do in
Zakynthos! We did it on the island
of Corfu and, frankly, it was one of
the best days we had in Greece .
If you want to bring some snacks and soft drinks on board, you
can also get a small foam refrigerator for 10 to 15 € at the grocery store.
Then you can have cold beers and lunch while swimming in the sea! You do not need a driving license to rent one of these small
boats. However, it is recommended to have a boat driving experience.
However, this is not necessary because the store's captains show you the ropes.
Actually, these boats are made for the traveler's perfect size for 2 to 4 people, and if
you divide the cost, it is extremely affordable, especially as jet skis and
marinas in other parts of the world are usually priced at 50 $ per hour. For
rent!
